The Western Red Cedar is the official tree of British Columbia. Growing
in the moist soil of the coastal forests the Western Red Cedar tree is
large and may live over a 1000 years. It has drooping branches with scale
like leaves bearing a strong aroma. The wood is light, durable and renowned
for its resistance to moisture, decay and insect damage, whilst its characteristic
grain Red Cedar is a renewable, biodegradable resource. Growing from the earth it is harvested, manufactured into cedar products that are used for decades or even centuries, then after its useful life span is ended it returns to the earth. The sustainable forestry practices employed today ensure a continued abundance of this quality, durable wood. Historically the Sechelt people of British Columbia call the Western Red Cedar "Tex'emay" meaning, Nature's Store House. The tree provided them with the raw materials needed to live comfortably in the west coast wilderness of British Columbia. Every time they harvested a portion of this multi-purpose tree they whispered a prayer of thanks. The outer bark was used to make bailers and as fuel, whereas the inner bark was woven into warm soft and water resistant skirts, capes and hats. The wood was carved into masks, totem poles, and dishes and was pried from trunks to make their long houses and roots were woven into water tight baskets whilst the withes were stripped and used as ties. So, as can be seen the Western Red Cedar is indeed a veritable store
house, and cedar products produced from it are valued and prized to this
day. |
